Plot
Nineteen-year-old Hinako Mukaimizu moves to a seaside town to attend college and surf on the beach, with no thought for the future. When fireworks set fire to the apartment, she was saved by Minato Hinageshi, a 21-year-old firefighter with a sense of justice. Hinako is attracted to his competent personality, and they bond as he learns to surf. They spend time together. After telling Hinako that waves are the best for surfing, Minato sacrifices herself to save a drowning jet athlete.
Hinako grieves her death and moves to an apartment far from the beach. One day, she discovers that he appears in the water every time she sings "Brand New Story", a song they often sing together. While others cannot see it, Hinako and Minato spend time together, even in public. However, Minato remembers his death, after realizing he couldn't touch Hinako and when his colleague, Wasabi, confessed to him. He asks Hinako to move on with her life, but she refuses. However, she realizes that she is too dependent on him after he prevents him from going to Heaven. When Hinako came to pay her respects at Minato's house, her older sister Yōko told her what prompted Minato to become a firefighter. Hinako learns that she's the one who saved Minato from drowning when they were children, and when she unlocks her phone, she reads his redacted text message telling him to "please yourself" follow your wave". She signed up for a lifeguard training course, hoping to no longer depend on Minato. Meanwhile, Yōko confesses to Wasabi, reminding her that he inspired her to go back to school when she was bullied.
At her part-time job, Yōko overhears the same group that had previously set off fireworks planning to do it again at the abandoned building with a large Christmas tree. Hinako accompanies him as they go in groups to gather evidence. Fireworks set fire to the building and Hinako and Yōko were trapped. However, Hinako summons Minato, who sends a wave of water into the building, extinguishing the flames. Hinako and Yōko ride the backboard on the waves. After exchanging final goodbyes with Yōko, Wasabi, and Hinako, Minato's spirit ascended to Heaven. The following Christmas, Hinako, Yōko and Wasabi, who are later dating, visit the Chiba Port Tower to celebrate Hinako receiving her lifeguard certificate. When Yōko and Wasabi leave, Hinako sings at a fountain, but Minato doesn't appear. The tower reads a message he wrote to her the previous year and Hinako burst into tears. After that, Hinako continued to do lifeguard duties and surf on the beach.
